Johnson Screens Solutions Provide Drinking Water in India

Ahmedabad, February 2023 – India, home to 18% of the global human population and 15% of the worldwide livestock population, only commands 2% and 4% of global land mass and freshwater resources, respectively. With a growing population and expanding economic influence, there is a consequent increase in demand for water in various sectors (agriculture, industry, domestic, recreation, infrastructure development, etc.) While India does control a substantial amount of the global extracted groundwater supply (25%), the demand-supply gap is compounded by such challenges as overextraction, poor recharge, and low storage capacity, among several other factors.

In response to this growing demand for rural access to fresh water, the Indian government launched the Jal Jeevan Mission in 2020 to provide Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to every rural household by 2024. The program aims to deliver water supply in adequate quantity and quality regularly at a household level by installing water wells in nearly 100,000 villages around the country. Source sustainability measures set by the mission also require an equal number of dedicated recharging wells set around the country.

True to our vision of a world where protecting lives and our precious natural resources comes first and to our mission of supporting our customers on their journey to environmental sustainability, Johnson Screens is a main contributor to the success of the Jal Jeevan Mission. Thanks to the outstanding quality of our Vee-Wire screens used the world over in groundwater and well industries, superior production capacity compared to competitors, and our unique position within the Indian water wells market as the sole possessors of an in-house nationally accredited testing facility, Johnson Screens India was able to secure the rights to supply the screens for the vast majority of the contracts associated with this project.

“We are very proud to be part of the important project for the people in India”, says Johnson Screens Private Ltd. CEO Shiven Amin. “This project allows us to fulfil our role in providing people access to clean water and improving their daily lives globally.”

Johnson Screens Granted NSF 61 Certification

Johnson Screens is the only USA manufacturer of stainless steel screens certified by NSF to that standard.

New Brighton, December 5, 2022 – Johnson Screens is proud to become the first and only company to be certified by NSF to NSF 61 for stainless steel water well screens. ALL stainless steel screens 2” in diameter and larger are now certified by NSF and proudly made in the USA.

NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certification is intended to certify products, components, and materials that contact drinking water, and Johnson Screens is the only water well manufacturer to receive such certification from NSF for stainless steel screens.

“Our stainless steel screens are a fundamental part of the history of the water well industry”, said Craig Benson, Global Director of Johnson Screens’ Water Wells Business Unit. “Our efforts to have them certified to the NSF 61 standard clearly demonstrate our commitment to providing clean water and making the best use of our precious natural resources.”

According to the NSF, “the NSF Mark is your assurance that a product has been tested by a trusted independent certification organization”. Johnson Screens is proud to have achieved this distinction.

This is the latest in a series of additions to Johnson Screens’ line of NSF-certified products. Their portfolio includes certified PVC well screens, casing, and drop pipe; chemical products for well development, cleaning, and rehabilitation; and glass bead filter packs.

Johnson Screens and HP Partnership Revolutionizes Screens Manufacturing

Johnson Screens and HP use innovation and cutting-edge technology to innovate and optimize screen manufacturing.

Brisbane, November 12, 2022 – Relentless innovation to serve the status quo. It’s a sentence that, at face value, seems to contradict itself, but it’s one that Johnson Screens has lived by for nearly 120 years. Our core Vee-Wire® product, while revolutionary at the time of its invention, has remained relatively unchanged since its introduction. Yet through sheer inventiveness, we have found an ever-growing list of successful applications for our screens. But what if we were to take this innovation a step further? What if we were to rethink how our core product is made?

These are exactly the questions that Denys Visser and his team are exploring with their recent experiments with additive technology and 3D printing techniques. The goal with our products, as with many manufacturing firms, is to create the most utility while using the least material possible. Given that, by definition, additive fabrication uses the smallest necessary amount of material to complete a given design, this process’s synergy in combination with our screens is truly extraordinary.

“For a long time, we’d been very interested in additive,” says Denys, Global Research and Product Manager for Johnson Screens’ Australia division. “However, additive never really left the hobby zone for us. The reason why I say that is, while the technology was able, the process around it was not… The other part of that was material. When you’re working with liquids or water, you can’t have a material that absorbs. The easiest material that many people use is something like nylon that is actually strong… (However), you go towards nylon, which absorbs water; we can’t use it.”

In search of a strong, non-absorbent fabrication material, Denys and his team settled on polypropylene, a cost-effective yet resilient material favoured by many 3D printers. An initial test was conducted using additive-derived components purchased from Weerg in place of the traditional stainless steel screens. After nine months, Denys found that the new components outperformed the original ones. Seeking to capitalize on the success of this new fabrication process, Johnson Screens began looking for a 3D printing partner that could keep up with the unique demands of the wastewater treatment industries we serve.

“Wastewater treatment plants are not allowed to stop. Ever. You cannot have breaks in service when it comes to wastewater; they have to run because the alternative is too bad for cities to handle,” says Denys. To properly service wastewater treatment equipment, parts must be fabricated quickly and continually. This meant our 3D printing partner needed to have not only to proper technology in place to fabricate our parts using polypropylene but the systems in place to meet this demand as well. Enter HP 3D Printing.

With over 76 years of technological innovation under their belt, HP mirrors the inventive spirit on which we pride ourselves at Johnson Screens. In a short time, our organization has been able to leverage HP 3D Printing products; our efforts have been met with surprise and praise.

“I always enjoy showing these parts to our suppliers or client-side engineers and asking them to figure out how they were made because as soon as you know a little bit about plastics, you look at the parts and say, ‘it’s impossible to injection mould, there are too many parallel walls.’ Some of them can guess right away, and they look at me and go, ‘is this additive?’”

The additive-derived components we’ve collaborated on have suffered zero recorded failures in testing and limited commercial use. Some of Johnson Screen’s customers have even begun to specifically request that they receive the new parts instead of the usual stainless steel screens. Johnson Screens is proud to partner with fellow technological pioneer HP 3D Printing, and we look forward to continued success for both of our organizations in the coming days.

Johnson Screens India Reinforces Our Commitment to Sustainability

By implementing the utilization of solar energy and other green initiatives, Johnson Screens India contributes to the creation of a sustainable future.

Ahmedabad, August 1, 2022 – Johnson Screens announced today a successful installation of a solar power plant on the roof of their manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad, India.

“A few years back, we were looking at our electricity consumption,” says Shiven Amin, CEO of Johnson Screens (India) Pvt. Ltd..“We began the exercise by talking with some companies about our ability to harness renewable energies around us, solar being the most accessible. We ended up installing a 150 kW solar power plant. The project was completed within three months and went off without a hitch. When we first considered solar, we had restrictions limiting our installation to cover approximately 50% of our facility’s monthly consumption. However, if those restrictions are lifted in the future, we can increase this capacity. That is a fantastic step towards increasing our utilization of renewable energy and meeting our sustainability goals.”

In addition to the solar panel installation, there are a number of other green initiatives mandated by the government with which our facility is proud to be fully compliant. Among these programs are “zero liquid discharge” programs, rainwater collection and recharging efforts, and tree planting programs. “For every 100 square meters of property, one tree must be planted as a green zone. We followed that rule AND made it a part of our culture. Visitors from other Johnson Screens locations plant their tree when they come to our facility,” says Amin. “Those initiatives demonstrate Johnson Screens’ commitment to a responsible and sustainable future.”
